fREQUENTLY aSKED denim questions

How should denim fit when you first get it? Will it stretch?

Denim should feel snug (but not painfully tight) when you first put it on. Most jeans will loosen a cm or 2 after a few wears, so it’s better if they feel slightly fitted at first.

What’s the correct way to wash denim to maintain its colour and fit?

Wash denim inside out and in cold water on a gentle cycle. Air dry whenever possible and avoid frequent washes to help preserve both the colour and the shape.

For darker jean colours, there can be some transfer, so we recommend washing these by themselves for the first few washes to avoid any potential colour run.

What’s the difference between denim fits e.g wide-leg vs. straight-leg?

When it comes to finding your perfect jean, we know it can be overwhelming! Sometimes too much choice can be difficult, however, here a few key things to remember when planning on committing to your next pair of jeans.

  • Wide-leg: Loose from the hips down, creating volume and movement.
  • Straight-leg: The same width from thigh to ankle, for a clean, classic look.
  • Slim: Narrow through the hips and thighs, with a slightly tapered leg (but not as tight as skinny).
  • Barrel: Relaxed at the hips and thighs, curved outward through the leg, then tapering back in at the ankle.
  • Flare: Fitted through the hips and thighs, then widening out from the knee down.
  • Baggy: Oversized and loose all over for a relaxed, streetwear-inspired look.

What fit of denim is best for my body shape?

There’s no one-size-fits-all! To help, consider the below:

  • Straight-leg works for most body types.
  • Wide-leg balances out curves.
  • High-rise elongates legs and flatters waists.
  • Relaxed fits add comfort and a casual vibe.

How many times should I wear jeans before washing them?

Usually 5–10 wears, unless they’re visibly dirty. The less you wash, the longer they last.

Should the waistband fit snugly without a gap at the back?

Ideally yes, the more your jeans hug your waist, the better. However, a small gap can sometimes be fixed with a belt.

Should jeans fit properly without needing a belt, or is it normal to need one?

Ideally your new jeans should fit well without a belt. In this instance, belts are more for styling than for holding your jeans up.

Can I cuff any pair of jeans if they’re too long, or does it depend on the style?

Most jeans can be cuffed but it looks best on straight, slim, and wide leg styles.

Alternatively, you can also take your jeans to the tailor to shorten them if they are too long. Just ensure the tailor knows how to work with denim and can keep the bottom stitch integrity to ensure they maintain their look!

Should I be able to sit comfortably in the jeans?

Yes, you should be able to sit, bend and move without pinching or cutting in.
